Creating a durable hardstand for a caravan involves meticulous planning, site clearing, excavation, and precise levelling.
At Active Bobcat Services we recently completed a project that required comprehensive land clearing and site preparation. Here’s a breakdown of how our team transformed a landscaped area into a functional caravan hardstand.
Site Preparation & Clearing
Before any physical work began, a thorough site assessment was done. We evaluate the landscape and determine the size and requirements for the hardstand.
- Initial Assessment: The original site featured well-maintained landscaping, with plants and shrubs that had to be cleared to make way for the hardstand. The presence of vegetation and small structures presented challenges that required the use of our bobcat, hired to efficiently clear the area.
- Clearing the Site:
-
- This included uprooting plants, removing rocks, and dismantling any small structures that interfered with the project.
- Our Bobcat operator made quick work of clearing the designated area, ensuring it was ready for the next phase of the project.
-
Excavation and Levelling
With the site cleared, the next step was excavation.
- Excavation Process:
- Precise excavation ensures the correct base depth and allows for proper drainage.
- Our Bobcat Operator excavated the designated area to the required depth.
- The soil was removed to ensure the proper foundation for the hardstand.
- Levelling:
- Creating a level surface prevents water pooling and ensures the stability of the parked caravan.
- The Bobcat operator uses a laser level and bucket to smooth the area.
Base Preparation
After excavation and levelling, the next step is preparing and compacting the base for the hardstand.
- Compaction:
- Compaction ensures proper support and drainage for the hardstand.
- We spread a layer of crushed rock and gravel.
- Then, using a compactor, we compacted the surface to create a solid base foundation.
Final Grading and Surface Preparation
Grading the surface is critical for ensuring the longevity of the hardstand.
- Final Grading:
- Ensuring the site is level, sloped properly, and ready for the final hardstand layer.
- This involved fine-tuning the surface slope for effective drainage.
- We also Inspected the surface to ensure it aligned with the client’s specifications.
Hardstand Installation
The last step was installing the top layer, which would become the hardstand for the caravan. In this project, we used a compacted asphalt layer. Asphalt is an ideal choice for hardstands because it provides durability, is relatively low maintenance, dust-free and can withstand the heavy weight of large vehicles such as caravans.
Inspection and Final Touches
Once the asphalt was laid down, we performed a thorough inspection to make sure the surface was level, well-compacted, and free of any imperfections. This final inspection ensures that the caravan will have a stable and durable place to park.
Site Cleanup
Once the hardstand was complete, we performed a full site cleanup.
- Removal of excess materials and debris.
- Leaving the site clean, safe, and ready for use.
